Sine - e = Sin!!

One of the major topics we will try to cover is the big naughty s-word: SIN. Try to come with some thoughts about sin, what it is, etc. I'll try to make sure we are all thoroughly depressed and ashamed by the end of the night. But remember, it is only by seeing the ugliness of our sin that our savior is glorious!

Sin entered the world by two individuals disobeying God and taking fruit He asked them not to take.

Is this indicative for us as a definition of sin? If original sin, all problems and all evils in the world, came about through this first "sin," as it were, could the first sin not tell us something of the nature of sin?

I think sin can be looked at in several ways:

- Sin wrongs others
- Sin defiles oneself
- Sin goes against God

Now, the sin of Adam and Eve is said to have negative effects on themselves, as when shame entered their lives (Gen 3:7) or God's curse upon them (Gen 3:17-24). Yet the clear emphasis on the sin of Adam and Eve is that they disobeyed and sinned against God, that their sin had little to do with themselves and everything to do with their relationship with Him.

We rarely approach sin in this context today: we call the world evil, full of "psychopaths;" we say that doing wrong hurts others, like stealing hurts a business, yet rarely do we approach either our private sins or our sins against one another and relate them to God.

According to Genesis, we ought to. Sin is rebellion against our good God. It is disobedience and hatred against the perfect one. It is wrong, because God is good, and His commandments are just. He had a perfect reason for telling them not to eat that fruit, just as He has a perfect reason to give us the ten commandments or the commandments of Christ.

Our sin, then, is not foremost against ourselves or others, but against God, and the others are a byproduct of sin's nature.

It is very hard for me to stop sinning in my daily life. No matter how much I tried to avoid sin, I still sin even in my flesh. Even though in my conscious, it is wrong to do so.

I remember hearing about the topic of sin from a pastor a while back that sin is a total separation between you and God. Many non-believers even some Believers have failed to realize the importance of sin and the significance as to how it has impacted their lives.

I found an awesome verse in 1 John 3:4 where it says: "Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness." This verse has expounded upon beyond human reasoning here, sin = lawlessness.

I want to give full credit to the people from the Blue Letter Bible website (http://www.blueletterbible.org/) for explaining about the Bible description of sin. Here it is:

1.Missing The Mark

God has a holy standard of perfection that He has given to us. When we sin we miss that mark.

Therefore, to the person who knows to do good and does not do it, to them it is sin (James 4:17).

Sins can be omission as well as commission. Sin is missing the mark, the divine standard that God has set up.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

Sin also includes hitting the wrong thing. It not only has the aspect of missing the proper goal, but also involves hitting of the wrong target. For example, the Bible says, God is love (1 John 4:8). Any feeling other than love toward our fellow believers is sin.

2. Going Astray

Sin is likened to us going astray.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to their own way (Isaiah 53:6).

3.Transgression

The Bible also calls sin transgression. This has the idea of overstepping the law of God

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions (Psalm 51:1)

4.Trespass

A trespass is putting our own will against God's

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1)

Summary

Sin is lawlessness, breaking the law of God. Sin consists of not only missing the mark, but hitting the wrong thing. All of us have sinned.
